More healthy food options

Last week we chatted about finding healthy food choices in the midst of traveling, think spring break and those do-you-think-they’ll-ever-get-here summer vacations. We reflected a bit on those lofty New Year’s Resolutions and the upcoming shorts and tank top weather. For more than a handful of us, it seems all we have to do is glance at some tasty morsel and we gain 3 pounds. Usually in our thighs or midsection, and then it seems a mere 10 minutes later our clothes are too tight and we’re uncomfortable, and a tad grumpy about it all too. Hence the need for nutritional choices that don’t require weeks of hard work to undo. So today I have another option for you in our series Healthy Food Options for Travel | Breakfast Bombs.

This is another one of those general ideas “recipes” with room for lots of substitutions. It’s actually best with Read More

How to build reclaimed wood and railroad spike wall hooks

4 / 15 / 174 / 14 / 17

Aaaand we’re back! It’s week two of the One of these Days Challenge and I’ve been super excited about this one. If you’re just joining us and want to catch up a bit, check out the details of our One of these Days Challenge. It’s crazy how long we can put projects off for years, even those that only take a few minutes. Like the wool dryer balls from last week that were a literal 7-minute investment that they say should last for years. But, enough about that, we have projects to do, right? We actually made this week’s One of these Days Challenge a few weeks ago in Dad’s barn, and today I’m sharing how to build reclaimed wood and railroad spike wall hooks.

Creative therapy Gold-kissed Wooden Bowl

4 / 11 / 174 / 10 / 17

We’re down to less than a handful of weeks left until the next family wedding around here. Lots of planning and big things between alterations and finishing up other desperately needed house projects. I don’t know about you, but in the midst of seasons of chaos, I have a deep need to stop. And when I stop I want to accomplish something creative and yet completely different. Something that can be done in one sitting. So when this little guy was abandoned in our garage after the kids moved into their own place, I decided we were going to be a perfect match. Sure enough, we were and now are. My very own little creative therapy gold-kissed wooden bowl.

Maybe it’s like those kids who are always finding and loving on stray Read More

One of these Days Wool Dryer Balls

4 / 7 / 174 / 7 / 17

It’s here! The first day of my “One of these Days”. If I’ve completely lost you then you can check out the details on our challenge first, and then come right back. My first project has taken a total of about 7 minutes at this point, and yet I’ve intended to do these for at least 3 or 4 years Craziness! I know. So while my little project flops around in the dryer, it’s a good time to fill you in on my One of these Days Wool Dryer Balls.

The links I pinned oh so long ago …

Holding tight to what really matters

4 / 4 / 174 / 4 / 17

As I write this, my husband and I are nearing the end of a full day’s drive at the end of a quick family weekend. It’s been the sweetest two days with my Dad, our bonus mom Mary, my brother and sister and several of the nieces and nephews. We had entirely too much food coupled with long conversations and the usual banter and ridiculously loud laughter. We’ve walked away with a mixture of lofty dreams, shared griefs and plenty of prayer needs for the days ahead. And at the end of these hours together we find ourselves holding tight to what really matters.

Many of you have been praying for my brother, Andy and his wife Liz as he battles glioblastoma. Thank you! We’ve posted updates on facebook but I want to take a few minutes today to share with you the effects of your prayers. Andy finished Read More

Join me for the One of these Days Challenge

3 / 31 / 17

Okay y’all, here’s the deal … That’s pretty much how I would start this conversation were we sitting across from one another at the local coffee shop. I would be leaning forward, making some sort of not-social-media-worthy face and using my hands way more than is necessary and you would naturally “be hanging on my every word”! I have almost 30 boards and just shy of 4,000 pins on Pinterest. Seriously! Check it out right here. You should go ahead and follow me too while you’re there, I’ve pinned all sorts of awesome ideas for the both of us. The thing is,  I’ve probably actually tried a 100 or so of those. Don’t get me wrong here, I love Pinterest for so many things but it needs to be more than just a collection of super cool ideas and inspiration or I should find something else to do with my 3 spare minutes a day. Just yesterday I thought of another one I’ve wanted to try and yet again that thought was immediately followed by this snarky thought, “One of these days”. And now I’ve decided today is that day. And I’ve also decided that you need to join me for the One of these Days Challenge.

How to think like a dog and why you and I should even consider it

3 / 29 / 17

It dawned on me a few weeks ago that I would help myself if I started thinking more like my dog does. The way I figure the whole dog to human years conversion thing makes us just about the same age. And yet somehow he seems to have a bit more wisdom in several areas of life. So, if you’re at all curious about how to think like a dog and why you and I should even consider it, then might I suggest the following …

Healthy food options for travel … or just crazy days at home

3 / 28 / 17

By this time of year, most of us have completely nailed those healthy eating resolutions from the New Year, right? For at least a week or two at least that is, then you hit a bump and fell off the wagon only to claw your way back on again a few days or weeks later. And depending on your temperament and resolve you’ve either maintained or repeated this scenario multiple times by now. Hopefully, you haven’t completely given up as I’ve been known to do from time to time, because now spring break and summer are actually about to become a reality for many of us. And that means shorts and tanks and …. enough said! And it’s precisely why we all need healthy food options for travel … or just crazy days at home, for that matter!

Spring Planting and Pudgy Fingers

3 / 21 / 173 / 20 / 17

Yesterday was the first day of spring, which means this will be happening soon. Rosemary, chives, cilantro, lavender, kale and violas will be joining the thyme and aloe, both of which should be awakening and growing strong again in no time. All this along with a new adventure with wheat berries planted in pots just in time to spring to life by Easter morning. And of course there will be plenty of chocolate eggs and sweet treats tucked right in the middle of this new life. Could be that’s why spring planting and pudgy fingers go together so well.

The only thing you really need to know to choose the perfect gift

3 / 17 / 17

This is it. Right here. The only thing you really need to know to choose the perfect gift. There truly is only one thing you need to ever know…

It’s not in the expense.

It’s not in the presentation. Read More

It’s not a race … or is it?

It’s not a race … or is it?

You’ve heard the quote, I’m sure. The one that boldly declares this life to be a journey and not a race. It’s most often served with a side of deep relief. And as delightful and deeply satisfying as it truly is, how is it that we habitually drift to ordering more frenzied options? Until it’s…

On learning curves and hang time

On learning curves and hang time

Can we all just pause and say Hooray for the weekend? Even after a 4-day week, this pause is such a beautiful treat. This weekend has me thinking on learning curves and hang time. Perhaps it’s a few pics I came across on my phone last night, or maybe the fact that I’m just past…

The 2-letter prefix that makes all the difference

The 2-letter prefix that makes all the difference

Isn’t it amazing the difference 2 little letters can make in the grand scheme of things? Think caffeinated vs. decaffeinated … a quantum difference, whatever time of day it is. Take the “em” prefix. It has the power to shift tough days into sweet memories that are worth looking back on purely for the smile it brings…

Real-life Moments and some refreshing reading ideas

It’s been a fairly quiet cue-the-crickets kind of month around here. When I say here, I mean this space on the world wide interwebs as I’ve heard it referred to. In the real-life moments of the day, it’s been anything but quiet. More like a raucous kids-all-jacked-up-on-summertime-and-sugar celebration, complete with enough coffee and Aleve for all the…

Our son gets married today

Our son gets married today

Our son gets married today. Our only boy. To the girl of his dreams. All of our dreams really. And the extra beauty of it all is it’s Mothers Day. Could there possibly be a better way to spend Mother’s Day? Gaining a daughter? The one you’ve prayed for since the day you found out…
